Chavadi Mane

Mysore, Completed
Chavadi Mane, the client a retired defense personnel and his wife, an artist had envisioned this home long before we broke ground. The architecture of the house designed by our team is a traditional home that has derived much of its details from the roots of the clients Mangalorean heritage linked closely to their childhood memories.
The entrance porch, known as a chavadi is a lovely sit out that welcomes leisurely evening reads and early morning coffee. The flooring in the ground floor is purely red oxide. This combines well with the wood and brass interior details along with the the clients antiquities.
The ground floor hosts the Living, dining, open kitchen and master bedroom. while the first floor is a more private space for the kids bedrooms and office.
The rooms on the top floor all have a single wall that is exposed natural brick work. Insistent on using natural brick instead of cladding, we expose the materialiaty of the structure and celebrate its beauty and rawness. The rough edges and rich colour blend with the eccentricity of the rooms and the beautiful woodwork. The idea of celebrating texture and imperfection also continues into the shelves and tables, with open log knots and naturally twisted planks of solid wood for the shelves, we allowed the beauty of the material speak for itself in a very minimal way.
The first floor shifts from red oxide to patterned tiles. The tiles bring in fun, eccentricity and resonates with the personality of the kids. The clients wife, an artist brought in so many imortant details. Intricately painted artwork for the interior doors, playful linen boxes and her own collection of art through the years are composed thorugh the house.
Brass details such as the handles for the main doors were sourced by the client during their travels. The solid brass chain with a modern link detail and intricate elephant was locally picked in Mysore.
Craftsmen ship of artists,Carpenters, wood turners, polishers and cane weavers truly makes the house a culturally rich home. The beauty and appreciation of skill and passion for indian craft and creativity shines through and through.
Antique pillars were sourced locally for this project
